Do you feel misunderstood by your family and friends or unable to talk to anyone about how you truly feel? What if someone asks you "how are you"? Do you answer "fine" or "okay", but inside you're feeling far from fine? Regardless of the problem, the first step to changing how you feel is to contact me and have a chat. Afterwards, you can take your time to decide if we could work together and then potentially make an appointment.
About me and my practice
Hi, my name is Sheila. I'm a qualified psychotherapist/counsellor registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have significant training and experience in working with both couples and indviduals. I take an integrated, person-centered approach to working with my clients. This means that I treat each client as an individual and use different techniques and therapies tailored to their personal situations and needs, while working at their own pace. With couples, I apply the same principles but also look holistically at both the relationship and the individuals making up that relationship. In couples counselling, I believe that only by working to improve every piece can we strengthen the whole.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons, each being individual and unique to them. You may find yourself struggling with life in general. You may be wondering how you can cope or trying to find a sense of meaning and purpose to your existence. Alternatively, you may be struggling with depression, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship problems, bereavement, abuse, trauma, or suffering another of the many problems that can affect our quality of life. Whatever your problem, could talking help you? We've all heard the saying "A problem shared is a problem halved". I believe this is often true.
I started my career working in human resources before spending many years at home raising my children. I then took the step of retraining as a counsellor at the University of Greenwich, which was something I had wanted to do for a long time. What held me back for so long was fear of jumping into the unknown: a fear that I finally conquered. Many people find fear debilitating. It holds them back from achieving the things they truly want in life. Maybe I can help you conquer your fears.
Experience
I have experience of working with clients with a variety of mental health conditions including depression, stress/anxiety, bereavement, domestic abuse, age-related conditions, addiction, trauma. I also have experience working with clients with disabilities and carers. I currently work with four charities: Make-A-Wish Foundation, Age UK Surrey, Your Sanctuary and Sight For Surrey. I hold enhanced DBS certificates from all of these charities.
